UL/CSA 62368-1 4th Edition — Timeline & Transition from the 3rd Edition

07. October 2025

The global safety standard for audio/video, information, and communication technology equipment continues to evolve. With the publication of UL/CSA 62368-1 4th Edition, manufacturers and compliance teams must prepare for the transition away from the current 3rd Edition.

Publication Timeline
The international base standard, IEC 62368-1 (4th Edition), was released on 26 May 2023. Building on that, the UL/CSA harmonised version—covering the U.S. and Canadian markets—was officially published on 31 July 2025 under the designations ANSI/UL 62368-1 and CSA C22.2 No. 62368-1-2025.

Effective Date
UL ties the effective date to the 4th Edition’s publication in July 2025, signalling the beginning of its adoption. CSA has announced a defined enforcement date of 30 April 2026, after which all new certifications in Canada must comply with the 4th Edition.
Some industry discussions reference 15 February 2027 as the final cutoff for the 3rd Edition acceptance, though this has not yet been officially confirmed by UL or CSA.

Transition from the 3rd Edition
During the transition period, certifications according to the 3rd Edition (UL/CSA 62368-1:2019) remain valid and are still accepted for new submissions. However, once the effective dates pass, the 4th Edition will be required for all new certifications.
Existing approvals based on the 3rd Edition may continue until they expire, subject to certification body policies. By 2026–2027, manufacturers should expect that the 3rd Edition will be fully phased out.
